Vladimir Georgiev: The loss set me back, but now I'm ready to go back to the top in boxing

Bulgarian boxer Vladimir Georgiev gave an interview for the website of the Sport in Bulgaria Foundation ten days after his fight with Shakiel Thompson for the WBO global title and the IBF European middleweight belt. The Bulgarian dropped a decision in the eighth round in the main event of the gala evening in Rotherham, UK.

Vladimir, who is one of the athletes supported by the Sport in Bulgaria Foundation, spoke of his desire to become the first Bulgarian to win titles at this level. It should be recalled that the match between the two was very contested, with both Georgiev and Thompson looking for the knockout right from the start. The fight ended in the eighth round with a win for the Brit.

“I accepted the loss and I’m already thinking about my future and in the short term. I am aware of what to expect. I am not demotivated, on the contrary I am aware that I need more work on my part. I am ready to go out and box abroad. Under good conditions, of course. I’m not worried about an away fight, I’ve already learned my lessons from the Thompson fight. I feel rested physically and mentally. I even thought about starting training from Monday, but because of the relaxation after the fight I got a little sick. When I’m fully healthy, I’ll start training. I’ll be back in the gym in a few days,” said the Bulgarian boxer about his recovery process.

Although the loss has set him back a few places in the rankings, Wladimir is adamant that he is ready to get back in the ring soon and head back to the top in boxing. “I think July will be my next official fight. I hope to be in two or three fights this year. My opponent was very strong and as he won, I could do it too. The match was all or nothing for me and it was a one-punch match. As close as I was, I stayed as far away from winning. That night was Thompson’s night,” added the Burgas man.

Vladimir Georgiev did not forget to thank his partners who supported him on the difficult road to the top. He remarked to her that he was impressed by the Thompson team’s treatment of him, and was even encouraged by the Brit’s parents after the match.

“I am grateful for our support and partnership with the Sport in Bulgaria Foundation, my personal coach Vlado Georgiev and all my friends who supported me after the loss. I received more calls than when I won the championship, everyone around me was happy with my performance. I believe in myself and in my team, Levski Boxing Club also supports me. I will repay everyone mentioned above in the ring with my upcoming victories”, Vladimir concluded.
