Bulgarian boxer Vladimir Georgiev lost to Shakeil Thompson in the fight for the WBO global title and the IBF European middleweight belt. The Bulgarian, who is one of the athletes supported by the Sport in Bulgaria Foundation, lost by technical knockout in the eighth round in the main event of the gala evening in Rotherham, UK.
The match between the two was very contested with both Georgiev and Thompson looking for the knockout after the first bell. In the seventh round, the Bulgarian took heavy shots to the body but stayed on his feet and even managed to hit Thompson right in the head a couple of times.
In the next round Georgiev fell to a knockdown after a two-punch combination. He stood up and wanted to continue, but the head referee put an end to the argument. Thus, the Bulgarian boxer recorded his fourth defeat in the pros – a 12-4 record (2 by KO), while his opponent remained undefeated in the ring, achieving his 12th consecutive success (8 by KO).
In the other bout with Bulgarian participation, Nikola Stoyanov fell to Harvey Lambert after a judges’ decision. Stoyanov scored one knockdown and Lambert scored two, thus earning the victory on the judges’ scorecards.
