The Sport in Bulgaria Foundation has launched its activities supporting the cause of swimmer Tsanko Tsankov, who has set himself the goal of swimming the 34 km course of the Catalina Strait. He became famous for setting a world record for 12 hours of continuous swimming in a 50 meter pool, as well as for swimming the Strait of Gibraltar.
With the help of the Foundation, Tsankov took part in the second race of the Ocean Seven circuit – the toughest open water swims that are officially certified by the World Open Water Swimming Association (WOWSA). The race took place on 27 August and the swimmer managed to complete the distance of the Catalina Channel in a time of 10 hours, 33 minutes and 29 seconds. Tsankov had to deal with huge waves, water temperature around 18 degrees, and in the last 2000 meters the temperature reached 15 degrees. Already on the second hour he got hypothermia and several crises, but he didn’t give up and continued without stopping until the finish.
With this initiative, the Foundation demonstrates its commitment to Bulgarian sports and its desire to create new opportunities for the performance and success of young athletes in Bulgaria.
In 2023, the Sport in Bulgaria Foundation announced long-term support for our talented chess player Nurgyul Salimova, who came second at the Women’s Chess World Cup in Baku. In the same year-on 20 November 2023, the young chess prodigy won a gold medal as the winner of the second board in the Bulgarian team at the European Women’s Team Chess Championship in Budva (Montenegro).
Bulgarian rhythmic gymnastics is supported by the Foundation
The mission of the Sport in Bulgaria Foundation is to provide opportunities for Bulgarian athletes to develop their talent and achieve success for the national tricolor. For this reason, one of the main causes that the Foundation will support in 2024 is that of individual rhythmic gymnastics athletes.
To also support team sports, the Foundation has decided to support the basketball team “Septemvri 97” from 2024. The club was founded in 1997 on the territory of the Sofia municipality ′′Krasna Polyana′′ and has achieved many successes over the years. The Foundation aims to support the development of Bulgaria’s future young talents in this field.
