Nurgul Salimova drew with grandmaster Alexandra Goryachkina in her last match of the Candidates Tournament in Toronto, Canada. Salimova played with the black pieces, and the two shook hands after the 59th move of the game.
The Bulgarian chess player thus ends the prestigious competition in the penultimate seventh position in the standings. The 20-year-old Salimova recorded one win, nine draws and four losses in Toronto and finishes with an asset of 5.5 points, the same as Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk, but Salimova has better additional indicators.
The winner was China’s Tang Zhongyi with 9 points and she will challenge for the world title against her compatriot Jiu Wenjun.
In the men’s event, 17-year-old Indian Domaraju Gukesh finished first and will play Ding Liren for the world title.
